Across the Border

Stories Before Bed

What happened to that little girl
Perched upon my knee
What happened to the love she gave
To no one else but me

What happened to her good night kiss
And stories before bed
What happened to the games we played
And all the books we read

The teenage years are in full flow
With all that it can bring
Cool dad is just memory
Stretched like a piece of string

Designer clothes and make-up
Hair gel and the rest
It’s now far more important
To keep up with the best

Dressed to thrill on a Saturday night
To dance the night away
Excited friends all dressed the same
Like peacocks on display

The teenage years are in full flow
With all that it can bring
Cool dad is just memory
Stretched like a piece of string

Does independence really mean
She no longer needs her Dad
Or is just the a fact of life
She’s going through a fad

Will the circle keep on turning
When in a couple of years
She realises her old man
Still there to wipe her tears

The teenage years are in full flow
With all that it can bring
Cool dad is just memory
Stretched like a piece of string
