Across the Border

Sand Between Your Toes

I remember it well your biggest regret
When thinking of the past
When ideas shone and life was bright
Before the dye was cast

I saw you waver and take a step back
And merge into the crowd
The chance was there for all to see
To break out from the shroud

How could you have been so naive
All those years ago
How could you let it slip through your fingers
like sand between your toes

How could you let your moment pass
Without putting up a fight
How do you sleep when tiredness comes
In the middle of the night

You say you don’t regret a thing
The memory has faded
But your light went out that fateful day
Your body and soul became jaded

You had the chance the choice was yours
We all thought it a foregone conclusion
But that stubborn streak within your mind
Resulted in confusion

How could you have been so naive
All those years ago
How could you let it slip through your fingers
like sand between your toes

How could you let your moment pass
Without putting up a fight
How do you sleep when tiredness comes
In the middle of the night
